Process

While planning our scene, my group decided that we wanted to depict our music video in ten unique shots.  We used a storyboard to plan and create our shots prior to filming our scene.  After we determined what shots we were going to take we decided that our scene would be filmed at the Hyatt Place Hotel Downtown West Palm Beach on October 15, 2019.  My group ensured that our settings inside of the hotel (guest room, lobby, bar, and rooftop) were well-lit area before filming.

Role

For this project, my group (Anna, Seyla, Adrian, and Carter) worked together to decide what scene to film and where we were going to film our scene.  Anna then recruited her friends Lucas, Tori, Bella, Garrett, and Johnny to be a part of our scene.  Once our theme and cast were settled, we got to work on our storyboard.  My group decided what we wanted our shots to look like, and what techniques we were going to use.  I then created the pictures for our storyboard.  For our scene, Anna was the director and videographer, Seyla was an actor, and Carter and I will be the editors.

Meaning

We tried to build meaning through lighting, angles, and movements.  In order to depict an accurate meaning, we ensured that our actors had the correct facial expressions.  In addition, we had the actors use specific body language to build meaning.

Challenges

While filming our project my group had a few challenges.  We were originally supposed to meet at the hotel at 1pm.  However, there was a lot of traffic and we ended up meeting around 1:40pm instead.  Luckily, we were all able to accommodate this time change to some extent.  Tori, Johnny, and Garrett had to leave around 2pm to go to work.  As a result, we were unable to film all of the main girl’s shots properly. We also had trouble choosing a day that everyone was available.

Changes

Our group decided to make a few changes based off of our challenges.  Due to lighting, we were unable to properly film shot one over-the-shoulder.  Instead, we filmed shot one from a medium and wide angle.  We were unable to film shot two on the bed.  As a result, we will be using alternative footage. We also had trouble filming shot six with the pan.  Since we were unable to properly preform this pan, we did not pan to the old version of the main girl and the boyfriend. In addition, we filmed a few of the main girl’s shots on a couch inside instead of outside.  For shots five and ten, we were unable to film from a low angle because our main character, Tori, was wearing a dress.  As a result, we filmed from alternative angles.  My group decided to do this because of weather and time constraints.  Furthermore, we filmed some extra footage for our editors that way they can fill in gaps if we have any issues with continuity.

Shot One

Our first shot “sets the stage” for our video by showing the dynamic between our main characters.

Shot Three

We are using a two-shot to show the interaction between our characters, the old version of the main girl and her boyfriend.  During this shot the old version of the main girl is dancing with her boyfriend.  In addition, we are using shallow depth to allow the audience to focus on the couple.  Furthermore, we are using a dissolve to seamlessly transition to the next scene.

We decided to use a medium shot to focus on the main girl’s thoughts. In this shot, my group has developed that the main girl’s old relationship made her feel crazy.

Research Used: We decided to use a long shot similar to the ones in the Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored music video that we researched.  In the Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored music video, viewers can see how Ariana is isolated and confident in herself, similar to how viewers can see that the main girl feels empowered now that she is alone.

Research

We used our research to determine what time of day to film our scene, where to film our scene, and how we wanted our shots to look.  In Rock Bottom, Hailee and her boyfriend have intimate moments together in bed.  In Boyfriend and Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored, the main characters are seen a parties.  In Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored, Ariana is shown isolate and alone.  As a result, my group decided to film at a hotel where we could stage a party and use a guest room.  Furthermore, we determined that the best time of day to shoot our scene would be early afternoon since our research showed that this was the best time of day to use natural light.  We decided to use natural lighting because we did not have access to lighting equipment.

The song and video that my group and I chose to base our video off of is ‘Break Up With Your Girlfriend’ by Ariana Grande. We plan to shoot a narrative video to show the main characters self conflict on staying in a relationship or leaving to focus on herself. My group members are Carter, Seyla, and Anna. Seyla and Anna, along with other people, will be in the video filmed in a bedroom and a hotel. Carter and I will be filming and editing with the help of Seyla and Anna.

Outline – We plan to use a lot of short takes to show as much as we could. Each shot and scene is based off research from the video of the song and we will edit our shots to the beat of the song.

Description: The main girl turns around and sees the old version of herself arguing with her old boyfriend.

Explanation of Choice: We are using an over-the-shoulder shot to focus on the main girl’s reaction to seeing the old version of herself.  This will allow the audience to understand that this scenario shocks the main girl.

Research Used: We decided to use a medium shot from a high angle similar to the one from the Rock Bottom music video that we researched.  In the Rock Bottom music video, viewers can see that Hailee is frustrated with her relationship, similar to how viewers see that the main girl is disappointed with her old relationship.

Explanation of Choice: We decided to use a medium shot to focus on the main girl’s thoughts. The hazy filter affect effect is being used to show that the main girl went felt as if she was going crazy when she was in her old relationship.

For this video project, my group member’s and I chose to make a music video based off the song ‘Break Up With Your Girlfriend’ by Ariana Grande. Similar videos that we chose to research include ‘Boyfriend’ by Ariana Grande, ‘Rock Bottom’ by Hailee Steinfield, and ‘Love Yourself’ by Justin Bieber. We chose these videos because they all have similar themes.

When listening to the song, you would think that it’s simply about what the song states; A girl wanting a guy she likes to break up with his girlfriend. But when you watch the video, you learn that the meaning behind this song is really self love.

• Her isolation throughout the video helps develop the meaning of her self love and focus on herself

Most of our shot types were chosen based off research. We used a lot of medium close ups and wide-shots because we found that these were the most used in fight scenes. We took these shots during class to establish the school setting. The only thing we changed from our planning was the roles. My partner decided to film and we had one of our classmates be the second character and my role as the other character did not change. Luckily, we had no challenges during our filming and everything went well.

The scene we plan to recreate is a school fight scene. The characters confront each other in class and then begin fighting. The events are modeled after “Fist Fight” and “13 Reasons Why”.

Background

We plan for all pictures to be taken during class on Friday since our story takes place in a classroom. My partner will be taking the pictures and I, along with one of our classmates, will be in the fight scene.

Master Shot

The story will begin with a master shot to establish who and where the scene will take place.

Wide Two Shot

This scene will have the two characters confronting each other. It will be a wide two shot to establish the link between the two.

Over The Shoulder

This shot will focus on one characters emotion during the conversation of the confrontation. We plan to use over the shoulder multiple times based off research from “Fist Fight” and “13 Reasons Why”.

We will focus on one character at a time so this will be a shot of the second character speaking.

This scene will be shot over the shoulder of one character punching the other. This will focus the attention on the action.

Medium Close Up

This shot will be at a low angle based off research from “13 Reasons Why”. The shot will be of the character that just got punched in the face and is holding the their face after the hit.

Point Of View

This shot will be taken from another students perspective to give the viewer a look from a characters eye.

The camera will zoom in on the loser of the fights face with a canted angle to give the effect of disorientation after just being knocked out.

The camera will zoom out to capture both characters in the aftermath in the middle of the classroom.

Long Shot

The scene will end with the camera zooming out to show the loser of the fight on the ground alone and isolated.

My partner and I will be recreating a school fight scene. We plan draw inspiration from a specific movie – Fist Fight and specific Netflix original – 13 Reasons Why.

Fist Fight(2017)

Directed By Richard Keen

In this scene, the two main characters, Campbell and Strickland who are school teachers, are squared up face to face before getting into a fist fight outside the school. They are surrounded by the whole student body plus teachers. The fight goes back and fourth between the 2 but eventually Strickland knocks Campbell out. The film techniques work together to show the power struggle in the fight and the emotions of the characters

Over The Shoulder

Campbell and Strickland are squared up face to face and Campbell then punches Strickland in the face. This shot focuses the attention on Strickland’s emotion after just being punched

Low Angle

The fight continues and there is a power struggle between the two. Strickland starts to win and he begins to continuously punch Campbell on his back. The camera zooms in at a low angle to show Strickland delivering the body blows and it shows that he is the one in control.

Medium Close Up

The camera zooms into Strickland’s face after just being hit in the side of the leg with an open stapler. By zooming in, the attention is focused on Strickland’s emotion without being uncomfortably close.

Canted Angle

Campbell is being spun around in circles by Strickland with a tennis racket. The camera is tilted at an angle to portray the effect of disorientation by Campbell.

13 Reasons Why (2017)

In this scene, the character Alex is crossing the road along with other students to enter his high school when he is almost hit by Montgomery in his Jeep. Alex is enraged by this and demands for him to get out so they can fight. Alex pushes Montgomery and a fight breaks out.

Over the Shoulder

Alex and Montgomery are fighting in the middle of the crowd when Clay, a main character, walks up to the fight. The shot is taken from over his shoulder to focus the attention on the fight but from his point of view.

Medium Shot

Alex has just dropped his bag after almost being hit. He is getting ready to walk up to Montgomery’s car full of rage. This shot focuses the attention on his emotion from a natural distance.

Two Shot

In this shot, Alex and Montgomery are squared up face to face in the middle of the crowd. The camera zooms in to focus the attention on the confrontation between the two and it establishes tension right before the fight.

Low Angle

Alex has just been punched in the face by Montgomery after he just shoved him. Alex realizes he is bleeding and becomes even more enraged. The camera zooms in at a low angle to capture the angry emotion on his face and he seems powerful in the shot because this is the turning point in the fight for Alex.

Closing

I plan to use these conventions to re-make a school fight scene because they are the most common used to capture all the important details. I noticed that both film examples used some of the same film conventions.
