Preliminary Task 2: Research

For this video project, my group member’s and I chose to make a music video based off the song ‘Break Up With Your Girlfriend’ by Ariana Grande. Similar videos that we chose to research include ‘Boyfriend’ by Ariana Grande, ‘Rock Bottom’ by Hailee Steinfield, and ‘Love Yourself’ by Justin Bieber. We chose these videos because they all have similar themes.

‘Break Up With Your Girlfriend’ by Ariana Grande

When listening to the song, you would think that it’s simply about what the song states; A girl wanting a guy she likes to break up with his girlfriend. But when you watch the video, you learn that the meaning behind this song is really self love.

• Long shot of Ariana in the club where most of the video takes place. Even though people are around her she still looks isolated
• Her isolation throughout the video helps develop the meaning of her self love and focus on herself

• Wide shot of Ariana on the balcony . This introduces a new setting to the video.
• This scene has a pan every time it appears

• Over the shoulder shot over Ariana to introduce the boy she likes and his girlfriend who he is dancing with
• This scene has a eye line match of the boy and his girlfriend

• Two Shot of Ariana and the boy she likes

• Medium Close up of all the characters together
• Situation: Ariana has a crush on a guy who has a girlfriend and she want’s him to break up with her. However, the girlfriend Ariana is singing about is actually herself because the character was made to resemble her. She is leaving her boyfriend to focus on herself.
• Social Issue: Leaving your significant other to better yourself
• Intended Audience: People in Relationships
• We can use this research to create the feeling of isolation in our project

‘Boyfriend’ by Ariana Grande,Social House

The connection between this song and our primary song is that they are both about being in a relationship and trusting yourself/your partner. This song is also about having a big crush on someone.

• Begins with close up of Ariana and Social House member

• Medium Shot of Ariana entering the party. She looks isolated even though people are around her

• Medium Two shot of Ariana and a random guy at the party
• This scene is also a eye line match because she is looking at the guy who she has a huge crush on. He is talking to another girl

• This scene has a tracking movement of Ariana as she is charging towards the other girl.
• Action match as she is running
• Helps create meaning of her having a big crush because she beats up another girl for this guy
• Both this video and our primary video were located in a party like location
• Social Issue: being afraid of being hurt or feeling like you won’t be enough for that person
• Intended Audience: People in relationships can relate more

‘Love Yourself’ by Justin Bieber

The connection between this song and our primary song is that they are both about leaving a relationship to better yourself.

• High Angle Two Shot/Master Shot establishes the characters in the video and we can already see they are in a separating relationship

• Medium Shot of the couple and we can see the girl is ignoring the guy

• Long shot to be able to see both people dancing at the same time and they are the only thing in focus

• Over the shoulder shot of the girl looking into the mirror still ignoring the guy

• Eye line match of the note the girl is looking at. The guy left a note that said ‘love yourself’ because he realized their relationship was toxic
• Girl framed on left on purpose so we could see that the bed is empty where the guy used to sleep
• Social Issue: Leaving your significant other for your own good
• Intended Audience: People in relationships can relate more.
• We plan to use similar shot types as well as angles for our video
• The location did not really help develop meaning it was more from the characters action
